Coal is an non - metallic organic mineral. It is an important source of power and energy. Coal is divided into four classes based on the amount of carbon, humidity, volatile matter and ash -
Types of Coal in India
(i) Anthracite Coal - This category of coal has up to 92 percent carbon content. It is the best type i.e. black, shiny and very tough. It has very little moisture. This category of coal is available in Jammu - Kashmir. It is most commonly used as a fuel. This coal is the best.
(ii) Bituminous Coal - The amount of carbon in this category of coal is 40 to 80 percent. Its color is black or dark brown and is soft. It contains some amount of moisture. Its reserves are in the states of Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal, Telangana, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh. This is second class coal.
(iii) Lignite Coal - The amount of carbon in this category of coal varies from 40 to 55 percent. Its color is dark brown and soft. It contains more moisture It is used to make artificial petrol and thermal energy. This coal is an important raw material for chemical industries. Coal of this category is found in Palana in Bikaner district of Rajasthan, Neyveli in Tamil Nadu, Lakhimpur in Assam and Tertiary rocks of Karewa region of Kashmir. This is inferior type of coal.
